Anni & Esk’s Fairy Tale Afterglow – New Orleans, LA

by on Jan.08, 2016, under Wedding & Engagement

Hi everyone,

Words can not describe how honored and grateful I am to be a part of Anni and Esk’s wedding in Biloxi, MS, and photograph their Afterglow Session in New Orleans, LA. It is a rare privilege for someone from CT to fly to that beautiful place and capture such a gorgeous Asian wedding for such an amazing couple. I am truly touched, and I will remember that experience forever.

But rather than my own memories, this post is really about Anni and Esk – and all the fun we had while taking their photos. We shot their Engagement Session in New York City, and this time we wanted something completely different. Anni wanted me capture the best New Orleans had to offer, so we made a plan to visit the local park – with that beautiful tropical vegetation, and those Oak trees with the gorgeous hanging lichen that grow only in the Deep South. Of course, no trip to New Orleans is complete without Bourbon St – and we got that too!

Nothing stopped these two, not even the homeless people on Bourbon St who decided to join us for a couple of photos (see below), nor the fist fight we somehow had to witness while taking pictures in the French Quarter (sorry, no images of that, haha). We spent the evening eating fantastic local crawfish, prepared by chef Jesse Le – could it have ended any better than that!? Here’s to Anni, Esk, and all my new Vietnamese friends I made during that trip – CHEERS!

Enjoy the eye candy…. yo!

See you around,

Your Pal Val

Underwater Styled Bridal Glam

by on Sep.09, 2013, under Wedding & Engagement

Hey guys,

Every year is a new beginning. In many ways. And that sometimes involves doing things that are a little outside of the box from the traditional bridal photography perspective. Like challenging myself with something cool. Something I haven’t done before. And learning new things along the way. So after doing that crazy shoot for Wedding Style Guide International  last year, I sat down and thought “OK, what would be a good idea to photograph this year? What can we do to make it more captivating, more challenging and more fun?” The water theme came out by itself. …You know me and my water obsessions, don’t you 😉 Everybody from the team was super excited to hear about it, and a few weeks later – Voila!

To further up the ante we decided to do this shoot not with one, but with two models – and do a big part of that underwater. At night. With colorful lighting, smoke, gorgeous flower decor on the bottom of the pool, crazy makeup, you name it. We did all this in South Windsor, CT, and …ummm…  somehow got the entire neighborhood around us to watch the show. Till almost midnight.

Photography is all about communication and feeding off of each other’s passion and excitement. Photographing around and underwater can be a daunting experience – even for the best wedding photographers out there. Water simply does not allow you to say anything to anybody – until you go back up to the surface, when some subtle moment might already be gone. Not to mention the bluish cast, the bubbles, the lack of light, the constant movement of everything down there under the surface….

We took a lot of pictures. And we rocked it. As challenging as this shoot was, I think we have some pretty cool stuff to share with you. The only question at this point is …how do we beat this next time? Lol. Check out the goodies.

Kudos to the absolutely Ah-Ma-Zing Team. I don’t know how I could have pulled it off with out you. You guys  totally ROCK!

Jilian & Jeremy’s Rocky Neck State Park CT Afterglow Session

by on Aug.14, 2012, under Wedding & Engagement

Hey there every one,

After being a bit quiet for a while – traveling around the world, teaching, and just being really busy photographing, I am back on the horse. And I’ve got some amazing shoots to blog about, so get ready for some seriously cool stuff.

The first story is about one of my favorite couples – Jil and Jeremy, who just got married in West Hartford, CT and had an stunningly beautiful wedding. Before the big day Jil was telling me about their great memories from Rocky Neck State Park in CT. So it was a no-brainer. It was THEIR place, and we HAD to do the Afterglow session there. Some cool things we wanted to incorporate – these beautiful red candles you’ll see in the photos, the wine a.k.a. the apple cider, the sand castle, The Shoes, and last but definitely not least, a lot of LOVE :)

The session was so much fun, and we certainly had a ton of things things to remember about it, including an unexpected rendezvous with the park ranger and the police in the dark, who thought we were doing …who knows what :) Imagine the situation!? :) LOL, even with that, the effort was well worth, and I am super proud with every single image we took that night. So once again guys:

Mari & Ben’s Beach Afterglow Session – Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

by on Dec.08, 2011, under Wedding & Engagement

Hey everyone,

Punta Cana is one of those special spots where you find beauty almost anywhere, any time of the day. The place is truly breathtaking – in every sense of the word. Add to that the fact I was photographing Mari & Ben’s destination wedding – such an amazingly beautiful event – and you get the formula for pictures hard to forget.

For the first part of our Afterglow session we went to the beach, where the sunrise colors were nothing short of spectacular. During my initial scouts of the beach a couple of days prior to this shoot I discovered this amazing palm tree, apparently hit by a hurricane and almost leveled with the ground. I also found a couple of coconuts, still intact, and I stashed two of them in the shrubs, hoping that no one would find them. That morning they were still there, and boy, what a wonderful addition they were to the shoot. While we were walking around the weather changed several times, and gave us an opportunity to capture some of its wet facet, with wind and tropical sprinkles in the lens. What a treat!

We finished the session with a quick dip in the pool and a chance to photograph Mari and Ben’s love through the ripples and bubbles of the crystal water. That in itself was an experience of a lifetime. I had my mask and snorkel on, and with each shot things were getting more and more exciting. I truly hope some day I can get the footage Mari’s dad was shooting so that I can show you some of the backstage action, LOL :)

Once again Mari & Ben, thank you so so much for making me a part of your very special day. It was such a pleasure, and a true honor to be with you. Congratulations, and may you celebrate every day of your lives together the way we celebrated your wedding!

Yours truly,
