Bulgarian Rock Formations

by Val on May.07, 2009, under Landscapes, Wedding & Engagement

Editing is a process where I am always on the lookout for more effective techniques. Lately I’ve been experimenting with some new elements in my digital workflow and can’t wait to show you what I have produced. The three galleries below showcase a serious departure from some old methods I’ve been using to prepare my images for print and web. The new images look crisper and have less grain/noise, even if the source is grainy or less than perfectly exposed film.  You can still notice some traces of noise/grain here and there, but the improvement over my older renditions of the same photos is dramatic and I am really happy with the results.

The galleries also represent one of my favorite topics in landscape photography – rock formations. The galleries are the conclusion of the Bulgarian saga and contain previously unpublished images shot mostly on slide (with the exception of gallery two, which contains only digital images).

Lately I’ve been getting a lot of questions about places I could use for  engagement sessions / trash the dress (ttd) sessions this summer.  These galleries might shed some light on the problem. I have always tried to combine landscape and wedding photography and now that I am showing you these photos I am really really excited. Just imagine how you would look in a white dress on any of these photos…  Exhilarating, isn’t it? …I can’t wait!

The first gallery contains images from Belogradchik, The Petrified Forest near Varna and The Stone Wedding near Kardzhali. Enjoy.

Bulgarian Plains

by Val on Apr.20, 2009, under Landscapes

This post is the next installment in a long series of photos taken in Bulgaria, known for its diverse landscape and dramatic natural beauty.  I have always been fascinated with these plains. Half of my family comes from this region and I grew up biking and running through these fields every summer. A piece of my heart is there.

Much like the Midwest, that landscape changes dramatically when a storm is approaching.  I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to be there and  photograph some of those moments. I hope you enjoy the photos.

Cheers,

Val

Bulgarian Landscapes, pt. II – the Black Sea

by Val on Apr.04, 2009, under General

This is the second part of my Bulgarian Landscape story. The topic is seascapes.

Although the photos are organized as if they were taken chronologically, they were actually taken in different days, even different years. What unites them is that all images were taken in early morning, starting at around 3 o’clock and ending around 10 AM.

All photos were taken on Fujichrome Velvia except 17 & 18 which were taken on Kodachrome.  To produce the blues, the pinks and the purples I have used a gold & blue polarizer – my all-time favorite filter for landscape photography. The digital editing was minimal – I wanted to preserve the natural look of film as much as possible.

Enjoy,

Val

Bulgarian Landscapes, pt. I

by Val on Mar.25, 2009, under Landscapes

This past January I did a show at Charter Oak Photographic Society about my native country, Bulgaria. I had more than 350 images organized in a slide show.  The show was a great success. Here’s the show introduction taken from the club’s Slide-O-Gram:

“Situated in the Balkan Peninsula on a crossroad between two continents, with its 1300 year old history, Bulgaria combines rich cultural heritage with an incredible landscape mixture. Bulgarian landscapes are all about diversity. It is hard to believe how such a small country encapsulates so much. Its mountains yield some of the most stunning images, and its seashores boast beautiful beaches and mysterious rock formations. Bulgaria is home to a number of historical and landscape phenomena, many of which are skillfully captured in Val’s work.

Val Nanovsky is an internationally recognized photographer, videographer and multimedia artist based in Vernon Connecticut. Val has been a COPS member since 2006 and has been regularly participating in our monthly and yearly contests. In addition, he is responsible for the design and administration of our web site, charteroakphoto.com. His passion in photography was ignited during his sophomore year in Sofia University, Bulgaria in the late 90’s. It has been constantly growing ever since.

In addition to landscapes, Val shoots architecture, abstract, fine art, commercial, portrait and wedding photography. His work has been awarded multiple times and published online, in magazines and advertisements…

…“Bulgaria” is a collection of mostly slide photography, taken during Val’s journeys back to Bulgaria between 2003 and 2007. The show will be enhanced by music, video and motion graphics and we truly hope you will enjoy it.

Below is the first installment in a series of posts about Bulgaria and features photos taken in some of Bulgaria’s most beautiful mountains. More from Bulgaria will be coming shortly.
