Sarah & Jimmy’s Amazing Valley Falls Photo Session

by Val on Feb.22, 2011, under Portrait, Wedding & Engagement

Hey Folks,

Valley Falls Park in Vernon CT is a beautiful place, easily accessible from anywhere in CT. The park has great trails, and amazing rock formations up the hill. In the winter there are huge icicles all over the place, and that just begs to be photographed. I’ve had a couple of engagement sessions in the area. When Sarah and Jimmy recently approached me, Valley Falls Park was the obvious choice.

I’ve known them as a couple for not too long.  But there was something magical going on with them. The moment I picked the camera and snapped the first few of photos, it felt like I was photographing two old friends. Everything started flowing so smoothly and nicely right from the start. We got right into creative mode. Angles, light, different little places around the area – you name it – and Sarah and Jimmy were so totally amazing. After a while we totally lost idea how late it had gotten – until something amazing happened in the dark. One of my flashes ran out of juice, misfired and left only Jimmy & Sarah’s backlit silhouettes. When we saw the image in camera we were… totally blown away! I had never had such a beautiful serendipity.

Every once in a while these things happen, I guess. And when they do, they are truly magical. This shot is quickly becoming one of my all-time favorites. Check it out below – image #10.

Cheers Jimmy & Sarah – for such an amazing photo session. And thank you so much for picking me to be your photographer. You guys ROCK!

Laura & Bill’s Engagement Session, Watch Hill, RI

by Val on Sep.26, 2010, under Wedding & Engagement

Meet Laura, Bill and their cute Aussie Shepherds, Louis and Amber.

Nothing rivals weather that is one of a kind. As Hurricane Earl was pounding the Atlantic a couple of weeks ago, fortunately away from the East Coast, Watch Hill, RI’s beach, was witnessing some truly impressive wave action. With a couple of shots in Laura and Bill’s backyard in Andover, CT, we started the main shoot walking towards the tip of the 3-mile long sand strip. The sun was slowly nearing the horizon and those grasses were so graciously dancing in the wind…. mmmm perfect!

Bill is totally into fishing (Yessss!). He had his striper pole with him and was so excited to cast the bait in the surf for me, with Laura behind his back…. what more could a guy wish for in an engagement shoot!? We took a whole bunch of those photos, slowing the action down to get those beautiful expressionistic streaks in the water. The last couple of photos had Watch Hill’s glowing lights in the distance… so romantic! All of us got totally wet, but that water was unusually warm for that part of the year, and boy, what a blast we had!

My sincere congratulations guys, I am really excited for you! Can’t wait for the wedding!

XOXOXO,

Val & Nick’s E-Session at Lighthouse Point Park, New Haven

by Val on Jul.28, 2010, under Wedding & Engagement

“If you don’t like the weather in New England, just wait a few minutes”. Good ole Mark Twain totally nailed it. On my way to Lighthouse Point Park the weather changed at least a dozen times. It was sunny when I left Vernon. Then it started raining. Then it started pouring. Then it stopped…  and then the cycle started again…  wow.

Fortunately there wasn’t even a trace of rain in New Haven. And OMG, what an epic shoot that was! Val & Nick, you guys were absolutely AWESOME (Did I say awesome!?) So here’s to the amazing time we had together …to the weather …to Literature (with a capital “L”!) …to Louis Armstrong  ….to Ballet of Angels  ….to Arizona, Vegas & the Grand Canyon …and to the many great topics we haven’t chatted about yet.  Cheers and congratulations! Can’t wait for the wedding – it will be a blast!

Yours truly,

Val

Leah & Brian’s E-Session: Fun, Romantic & Cute

by Val on Jun.01, 2010, under Wedding & Engagement

Wow, what an afternoon that was! It started with overcast skies, perfect for nice and soft portraiture, and ended with this gorgeous colorful sunset.

But this story is NOT about the sunset and the weather. It’s about love and happiness. It’s about a wonderful couple and their cute little one. It’s about some of the nicest people I have met ever since I came to CT. And of course, it’s all about the fun we had together – feeding the geese, sticking our tongues out at each other, walking on the green grass, jumping high in the air (just for the heck of it), need I say more… I hope the pictures tell you the rest.

Guys, it was such a pleasure photographing all three of you! I can’t wait for the wedding!

A BIG BIG hug,

Val

Sarah & Scott’s Engagement Session

by Val on May.28, 2010, under Wedding & Engagement

Hi folks,

Sarah & Scott’s engagement session was an epic one – in a number of ways. We had so many wonderful photo ops – waterfalls, parks, trails…  And along the way, I got to know two incredible people – with big hearts and passion for the outdoors and all kinds of cute pets. Wow, what can I say…

The last part of the photo shoot took a slightly different direction from what I traditionally do at e-sessions (outdoor/green, that is). Let me just say that there is nothing sexier in the world than an airplane.  …Well, there actually is, but that’s a different story :-) I always wanted to incorporate planes into my wedding photography and this time things lined up perfectly.

HUGE thanks to Mary Caravella and her husband for so graciously making things happen for us at the Skylark Airpark in Ellington/Somers. Kudos! Here’s what came out:

I am so so excited about Sarah and Scott and can’t wait for the wedding. You guys were awesome!

See you around,

- Val

Krass & Irka’s Fun in the Wind Mill Fields

by Val on Mar.31, 2010, under Wedding & Engagement

Hey there gang!

I’ve got an interesting story for you today. Krass, myself & Irka were recently driving through this huge field of hundreds and hundreds of wind mills on the way to an outdoor wedding session I had to do. I saw the wind mills and… fell in love with them! How cool it would be – I was thinking  – if we did a couple of photos around this place.

So on our way back when we were passing through the same place the sun had already started setting. We saw the great color and decided to pull over and capture as much of it as we could – right off the road. I got to experiment with my fisheye lens and Krass and Irka were excited to try some quite unusual, hmmm, I’d say, plain crazy poses.

Bottom line: this was tons of unexpected fun! Too bad it was just a quick improvised shoot and we didn’t have more time to enjoy ourselves. Well, may be next time – right before the wedding :-)

P.S. Krass = the same Krass who takes many of my portraits and videos, and happens to be a pretty darn good photographer!

What Makes me a Green Wedding Photographer – part 2

by Val on Feb.23, 2010, under Wedding & Engagement

Take a moment from your busy daily routine, step back and look around. Climb a mountain, enjoy the fresh air, smell the roses, count the stars in the sky, take a walk in the woods…  exhilarating, isn’t it?  This is what Mother Nature has given us and we are absolutely responsible to preserve it for the sake of our own kids and the future generations. A wedding is a beginning of two people’s lives together, carrying a strong symbolic meaning. It is the perfect moment to demonstrate our concern and dedication to our planet’s future.

…This is how I started thinking about turning my business green. Some of the main points of my philosophy were already discussed in What Makes me a Green Wedding Photographer, part 1. What follows up next is a snapshot of the rest of it.
