Spring is here?… “Not yet” said the Ice Queen

by on Mar.17, 2016, under Wedding & Engagement

Hello my friends,

The cherries outside will soon start blooming, and the birds will be singing their beautiful songs. …Do you feel it in the air? It’s almost that time of the year. But before that happens, I have something pretty special to share with you. It has been in the making for quite some time – from crystallizing the concept to finding the location and putting everything together. In order to make something stand out, especially in the oversaturated field of wedding photography – where people have already seen everything – it really needs to be special. Not just partially – every single bit of it.

I always had a vision of making my own Ice Queen photograph. The Northeast, on the other hand, has always been fascinating to me in the winter – particularly with these gigantic icicles you can see along the smaller roads. Those, as my own of twist to the Ice Queen idea, were a big part of the initial vision I had in my head.

So here we are – in Alaska (…just kidding – we are in Bolton, CT), enjoying this absolutely stunning natural display in front of our eyes – and racing with time to capture the best out of the beautiful soft light before the sun went down. This is the place for me to say my praises for the absolutely amazing group of talented people I had the pleasure to work with. None of that would have been possible without them – and every single person absolutely nailed their part. …Did I mention how much fun we had?

The results are below. You be the judge. Enjoy!

Anni & Esk’s Fairy Tale Afterglow – New Orleans, LA

by on Jan.08, 2016, under Wedding & Engagement

Hi everyone,

Words can not describe how honored and grateful I am to be a part of Anni and Esk’s wedding in Biloxi, MS, and photograph their Afterglow Session in New Orleans, LA. It is a rare privilege for someone from CT to fly to that beautiful place and capture such a gorgeous Asian wedding for such an amazing couple. I am truly touched, and I will remember that experience forever.

But rather than my own memories, this post is really about Anni and Esk – and all the fun we had while taking their photos. We shot their Engagement Session in New York City, and this time we wanted something completely different. Anni wanted me capture the best New Orleans had to offer, so we made a plan to visit the local park – with that beautiful tropical vegetation, and those Oak trees with the gorgeous hanging lichen that grow only in the Deep South. Of course, no trip to New Orleans is complete without Bourbon St – and we got that too!

Nothing stopped these two, not even the homeless people on Bourbon St who decided to join us for a couple of photos (see below), nor the fist fight we somehow had to witness while taking pictures in the French Quarter (sorry, no images of that, haha). We spent the evening eating fantastic local crawfish, prepared by chef Jesse Le – could it have ended any better than that!? Here’s to Anni, Esk, and all my new Vietnamese friends I made during that trip – CHEERS!

Enjoy the eye candy…. yo!

See you around,

Your Pal Val

Underwater Styled Bridal Glam

by on Sep.09, 2013, under Wedding & Engagement

Hey guys,

Every year is a new beginning. In many ways. And that sometimes involves doing things that are a little outside of the box from the traditional bridal photography perspective. Like challenging myself with something cool. Something I haven’t done before. And learning new things along the way. So after doing that crazy shoot for Wedding Style Guide International  last year, I sat down and thought “OK, what would be a good idea to photograph this year? What can we do to make it more captivating, more challenging and more fun?” The water theme came out by itself. …You know me and my water obsessions, don’t you 😉 Everybody from the team was super excited to hear about it, and a few weeks later – Voila!

To further up the ante we decided to do this shoot not with one, but with two models – and do a big part of that underwater. At night. With colorful lighting, smoke, gorgeous flower decor on the bottom of the pool, crazy makeup, you name it. We did all this in South Windsor, CT, and …ummm…  somehow got the entire neighborhood around us to watch the show. Till almost midnight.

Photography is all about communication and feeding off of each other’s passion and excitement. Photographing around and underwater can be a daunting experience – even for the best wedding photographers out there. Water simply does not allow you to say anything to anybody – until you go back up to the surface, when some subtle moment might already be gone. Not to mention the bluish cast, the bubbles, the lack of light, the constant movement of everything down there under the surface….

We took a lot of pictures. And we rocked it. As challenging as this shoot was, I think we have some pretty cool stuff to share with you. The only question at this point is …how do we beat this next time? Lol. Check out the goodies.

Kudos to the absolutely Ah-Ma-Zing Team. I don’t know how I could have pulled it off with out you. You guys  totally ROCK!

Wedding Style Guide International Fairy Tale Wedding Photo Shoot

by on Sep.11, 2012, under Wedding & Engagement

Hey guys,

Recently I had the honor to do an exclusive photo shoot for Wedding Style Guide International, an amazing wedding magazine from Australia. WSGI is all about trendy ideas for your wedding, collected from all over the world. Whatever your style your wedding is, there is always something for you in that magazine that is truly unique and special. I’ve always tried to stay fresh and away from the beaten path,  so when they approached me I was soooo wildly excited to work with them. The issue is 410 pages, and about 30 of them are dedicated to what we did together (YAY!!!).

Lush. Green. Fairy-taley. Those were the initial ideas we had in mind when we sat down and brainstormed with my good friend Helena Willis from Perfect Princess Events. She came up with a stunning table setup and floral arrangements – from our model’s head piece to the hand picked moss on the table,  the colorful centerpiece, the cute lanterns, the roses on every plate…. all the way to the very last detail. Keri Shea’s makeup wizardry beautifully complemented Helena’s creations. Jess from Bliss Bridal selected the perfect Justin Alexander dress for us. And our model Jen did such a fantastic job being our fairy bride. The icing on the cake was the out of this world lighting and special effects show – by the one and only Audio Media Solutions. When the sun went down the entire forest was lit up in color – from below. True magic. Check it out.
